Do You Have Space for an Island?

Islands are often seen as the ‘must have’ for a new bespoke kitchen, particularly with today’s sociable kitchen spaces. This is because they not only look great, but they also act as a visual divide between the social and cooking zones as well as providing extra seating, eating and food preparation areas.

At Churchwood Design we produce multi-function islands in all styles and shapes; from extra long islands, split level islands and islands with curves.

However, for those thinking about incorporating an island into their new bespoke kitchen, you need to remember that you require around 1 metre space between the sides / outer edges of an island and the walls or kitchen base cabinets, or in an ideal world 1.2 metres. The reason for this is to allow enough space to manoeuvre around the island as well as to fully open cabinet doors, dishwashers and fridges etc.

For those that would like an island but perhaps are limited on space, all is not lost. It might be that a peninsular arrangement is possible, which gives the additional worktop hub that an island provides without needing so much floor space. Or a freestanding island unit, perhaps on castors so it can be moved around as needed, maybe another possibility.

We would never recommend having an island if you genuinely don’t have the space for one, as all that it will do is overcrowd your room and make manoeuvring around it tricky, which over time will become frustrating! We are always happy to advise on what will work best for your space.
