How Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly is Our Furniture?

There is no doubt that sustainability and impact on the environment are playing a fundamental point in our buying decisions and this certainly applies to high quality bespoke manufactured furniture.

The fact is, long before it became a ‘popular’ buying criteria, Churchwood Design has always kept a close eye on its impact with the environment. In fact, the business began making kitchens and furniture using reclaimed pine all the way back in the 1980’s! Churchwood Design makes some wonderful furniture creations repurposing old and reclaimed timbers allowing future generations to enjoy the characteristics, colour and patina of aged timbers that really tell a story. You can see, on our website, reclaimed oak as well as reclaimed pine furniture.

Churchwood Design ensures that all new timbers come from FSC accredited sources where specially managed forestations have been used, and we carefully re-use wood off-cuts to minimise timber waste as much as possible. Waste saw dust is collected by a local farmer to use as animal bedding, and all other waste is sent for recycling.

Churchwood’s furniture is built to last, and that in itself means there is no reason for it ever to end up in landfill. Furniture can be repaired should damage occur (we have even had kitchens survive floods as the solid wood structure will just dry out). If a fresh look is desired it can be refreshed with a new paint finish, or new handles, for example. And if, one day, it is removed from the property, then it can be re-used by a new owner and fitted into a different property - it may not be made to fit, but we find that determined people looking for a good quality yet budget friendly second hand kitchen will make it fit!
